Hardy Weinberg Equilibium

What needs to happen in order for evolution to no occur?

  • Random matting
  • no natural selection/ no reproductive bias
  • no mutations
  • no immigration/ migration
  • large population.
Evolution is a change of a gene frequency in a area.

The Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium allows us to see if evolution has occured or not.

Most life does not evolve as fast as the world changes.
Proof?
99.99% of life is extinct...

Mechanisms of Evolution

rgins of species!!!

What is a specie?
A specie is a group of individuals that reseamble one another, mate freely in nauture and produce fertile offspring.

So how do i become a specie?
There are 6 different barriers that may be obstacles and may prevent mating or inability to fertilize if mating occurs. Here they are:
  • Habitat isolation- you live in different places
  • temporal isolation- reproduce at different times
  • behavioral isolation- you act differently
  • mechanically- If your genitals are not compatible.
  • gametic- if your sperm and egg are not compatible
Post-Reproduction
  • reproduced hybrid viability- the babies dont survive
  • Reduced hybrid fertitlity- your babies cant have babies
  • hybrid breakdown- the kids of your kids cant have babies.
if none of these happen to you, then you are a specie!

FIRST OF ALL!

Darwin DID NOT come up with the idea of evolution.
Darwin came up with evolution by natural selection.
LAMARCK!
he said that genes can be influenced by environmental conditions.

Darwin said that evolution occured with natural selection- meaning there will be variety and that it is survival of the fittest.
It will only occur in the worse conditions.

Darwin -
There are 3 types of selective pressures
  • stabilizing - for example the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.  50- 50.
  • Directional- higher concentration on one side.
  • Diversifying- makes 2 different species. there is no mixture.

-LIFE ON EARTH-

Ohkay, this is a 2 day lecture my biology teacher gave us on WHO LIVES ON PLANET EARTH. Its about 20 chapters long, so obviously we wont get the complete awsome story of biology.

To start the spectacular world of
PROTISTS. =)

First of all, what's a protist?
well a protist is a one celled living creature. YES. living. it is not a human, it is not a plant, fungus or a animal.
So what does this one celled creature have in common with us?
-The same thing it has in common with every single celled living thing on earth. it Eats- processes- synthesizes- eliminates. or EPSE

How does it achive all of that, with it being single celled?
-Because it lives in water! All cells NEED to be surrounded by water.

For example a sponge:
spongebob Pictures, Images and Photos

it is a living creature. It EPSEs. How because it is surrounded by water.
We evolved from water creatures.

& so our journey begins.
The evolution of our body systems.

the cnidarians, like hydras & corals where the first step to developing a digestive sack.
But now instead of just waiting for for the food to hit it BAM. it hunted. Although it still waited around.
It had a MOUTH. or just a simple opening in which it would suck in food.
this is where the first EXTRACELLULAR DIGESTION took place. Whats that you ask?
EXTRACELLUAR DIGESTION- is when digestion happens out side of the cells, in a stomach of some type.
From there it would just do its EPSE. But... Where would the waste go if there is no ANUS!?!?. well.. no other exit but the way it came in from.

Whats the next step?
You are now taking in bigger food, so you need to be able to synthesize it & extract everything from it right?
So you need compartization. & that takes us to WORMY. It has a tube within a tube, levels of complexity, so that different parts can digest different things.

So now we have a good Digestive System. What now?

How do we get from the oceans, & lakes to land?
- We need to have support.
--Sense organs
---& a breathing apparatus

important word CHORDATA. we belong to it, most animals belong to it to. What it mean? it means we have a BACKBONE.

Circulatory  Systems
there are two types.
CLOSED-  We have this type of system. It is closed (duh hints the name). But why is it closed? When it's closed,it helps the blood circulate faster, easier & it makes us WARM BLOODED! Our dirty blood does not mix with our clean blood.

OPEN-  It is Open... lol. Well as a example, a grasshopper has this type of circulatory system. Blood is pumped multiple hearts. This isnt good because it guarantees a short life span because blood is just randomly distributed to the cells.

STOP! RETHINK!
Evolution does not just happen over night. A protist didnt just go BAM maybe i should have a heart. Evolution happens in small steps. And if one system is going to evolve, the rest will evolve too.

So obviously we need to change the OPEN CIRCULATORY system. but keep in mind that ALL , I mean ALL cells must be surrounded by H20. if not it dies. Just look at your skin!

Thats dead Cells all the way!

Your heart needs to change if you want to get any bigger, and there cannot be any mixture of blood.
What makes things go faster? MORE OXYGEN!

Amphibians- Ohkay so they have a 3 chambered heart. BUT. the dirty and clean blood mixes at the ventrical. So that is deffenitly a problem and needs to be re designed.

In your body, you have veins and arteries. We all know that arteries go away from the heart and veins go to the heart. But did you know that they had HOLES in them.

Which leads us to the next thing! Most people never hear of this, but is is MUY MUY IMPORTANTE.

The Lymphatic System

I bet you are going like what in the world is that?!?
Well dont feel bad i didnt know much about it either.
It is part of the circulatory system. It helps keep all you cells wet.

STOP!! RETHINK!!
remember how protists survived? b/c They were always kept moist! in water! H2O!

So, the lymphatic tissue oozes blood through your body, and it bathes all your cells. So that they stay surrounded by water at ALL times.

EXAMPLE: you know how when you sit down for a really really long time, all the blood goes to your feet, and they swell up? Well all your blood goes to your feet, thats when the lymphatic system goes to work. it starts oozing blood to keep your cells wet.
NON EXAMPLE: when your foot falls asleep.  The weird tingly sensation you feel is not the LS, but the blood rushing back to your foot. (durrr )

SUMMARIZE IT FOR ME!
We need more O2 in our blood right, so we need a better heart, whats the better heart? A 4 chambered heart that can pump blood faster and better! & keep the bloods from getting combined. The lymphatic system keeps you alert and keeps your cells alive by covering them with blood!

Annelid Worms

OHHHH SNAP. WORMSS.

Earthworms belong to the Phylum: annelida- Class: Clitellata- Subclass: oligochaetes.
They have a hydrostatic skeleton-meaning made of water-.
They breath through their moist skin, which is covered in mucus. (Thats why they are slimy).
It has satae, which are like sort- of like feet, but are really used to keep it from slipping when crawling.

Photosynthesis! & Cellular Respiration!

Photosynthesis
FORMULA:  CO2 + H20--> C6H12O6 +O2

Photosynthesis occurs only in the chlorophyll of plants. This produces ATP, which is energy.
It goes through several stages to turn Carbon, Water & sunlight into BAM energy.

Cellular Respiration:
FORMULA:O2 + C6 H12 O6 --> CO2+H2O+ATP
Cellular respiration occurs in all living creatures. It turns glucose molecules into ATP.
It starts with the process of Glycosis in the Cytoplasm. It produces 2 ATPs and 2 Purivic Acids.
If there is no oxygen then the glucose goes through a process called fermentation.
2 types of fermentation.
-Alcoholic-  Where it produces 2ATPs, alcohol & CO2
-Lactic Acid- Produces 2 ATP & lactic Acid

Then it goes to the Krebs Cycle

Protein Synthesis!

How do you turn a cow into a human?!?
Okay so you dont exactly turn the cow into human, but how do you turn those cow proteins you just ate in that steak, into proteins your body can use?

this process is called PROTEIN SYNTHESIS!!!

It all starts with the DNA molecule being transformed into RNA.

Ohkay so first the DNA strand is transcripted into RNA.
RNA & DNA are different because it is missing that extra oxygen molecule.
When its being transcript, in RNA there is no T, so instead of a T there is a U.
Then in the Cytoplasm there are ribosome, in there is where  TRNA aligns with the MRNA, putting together the codon and anticodons. It starts at the START codon (AUG) .
On the TRNA there are also different animo acids.
There are over 20 different animo acids in humans.

Thats a good video!!!

Genes & Red Blood Cells

Genes is a section in a DNA strand that holds the instructions for a specific function.

The Book of Brenda
1. A chapter - which are chromosomes, You get 23 pairs from each parent so in total you have 46.
2. A paragraph- which are Genes, you have 20,000 - 30,000 genes in your body!
3. Sentences- Which is like gene splicing, the TRNA and the MRNA
2. Words- which are the codons that make up the DNA
1. Letters- there are 4 of them , A & T, C & G or in RNA there is A & U, C & G. there is a six one
  • We have about 30,000 genes in our whole body
  • Blood Cells are the only cells that dont carry DNA because they dont have nuclei.
  • The reason they have no nuclei is because they have a specific biconcave shape, and a nucleaus would not let it have that. They have that shape because it allows them to have a bigger surface area
  • The part of the body that uses the most oxygen is the brain & the nucleus is the brain of the cell, so if it has a nucleus the oxygen that needs to be carried is going to be used up by the nucleus instead of being tranfered around the body.
